Restored
in 1972; last on the road in 1981; only 22,500 miles on replacement BLMC engine;
in need of complete restoration; engine turns by hand
This rather
sorry-looking MGA 1600 Coupe was first registered in East London in March 1960
and comes with two old logbooks and a V5 showing that it has had seven former
keepers, all but the last in the London/Essex area.
From 1970 onwards it was owned by the rather splendidly named Dr G
Eykelbosch of Birmingham General Hospital. Lots of invoices show that he looked
after the car well throughout the 1970s, including having a new BLMC-supplied
engine fitted by Patrick Motors in 1971 which is still in the car today. A
replacement gearbox was fitted at the same time, the mileage at this point being
c.85,000.
There is another invoice for a
“complete renovation” by AJ Fox of Balsall Heath dated October 1972 plus an
engineer’s report by Scottish Motor Services of Glasgow dated March 1974 which
declares the car to be in “well above average condition”.
Judging by copious notes from Dr Eykelbosch and six old MOTs, the car
was laid up in 1981 and then briefly got going again in 1986. It seems safe to
assume that it has not been used since.
The
odometer currently shows 7,413 miles so it has presumably only covered around
22,500 miles on the replacement engine/gearbox.
Our vendor acquired the car in 2022 intending to carry out a full
restoration but, as you can see in the photos, this has not been started yet.
Retaining its original Essex-issue number plate 1128 VW (which is transferable
according to the V5C), it is on offer here at no reserve and should make a
worthwhile project for someone.
