Description
Wonderful special with a bespoke cedar wood body inspired by the
traditional Canadian cedar strip canoe; fully rebuilt BMC 1,098cc engine and
gearbox; unfinished project
This
wonderful Special is based on a 1935 Morris Eight Tourer that our vendor
acquired in a partially dismantled state. The original ash frame and body panels
were in bad shape so our vendor decided to make an entirely new body of his own
design. A joiner by trade, he had always admired the beauty of the traditional
Canadian cedar strip canoe so that formed the inspiration for the body on this
car.
Each
strip of cedar is machined with a cove (concave) on one side and a bead (convex)
on the other so they are firmly interlocked but have sufficient articulation to
form a curved surface. As you can see in the photos, the body has not been
completed but there should be sufficient cedar strips to finish the job, and if
not, the spindle moulder cutters are included so you can make up some more
strips if required.
It
is fitted with a BMC 1,098cc engine (as installed in the Morris Minor etc.)
which has been fully rebuilt with new pistons, bearings, duplex timing chain,
oil pump, reground crank etc. The cylinder head has also been rebuilt with
reground valves and new seals etc. but will need final assembly (the push rods,
valve rockers, rocker cover, thermostat housing, head gasket, nuts and bolts
etc. are all present). The gearbox has also been rebuilt by a firm in
Birmingham.
All
four wheels have been shot-blasted, powder coated and fitted with new tyres and
there is also a spare rim. There are some components from the Morris 8 including
seats, headlights, dashboard, steering wheel, petrol tank, and some new engine
auxiliaries (distributor, spark plugs and leads, starter motor, alternator,
remote oil feed, water pump, coil etc).
Unfortunately
our vendor has recently lost his workshop and no longer has the space or the
facilities to finish the job, hence the car’s appearance in this sale as an
unfinished project.
As
you can see in the photos, the woodwork has been beautifully executed and will
look stunning when it is finished, polished and varnished. It comes with a V5C
and a chassis plate (as pictured) so it should be possible to get it registered
once completed.
On
offer here at no reserve, it should keep someone gainfully employed over the
coming winter months and will certainly get people talking when back on the road
where it belongs. It would also look great as a static display ornament in a man
cave, shop or one of those trendy hipster bars that seem to be springing up in
every town centre these days…
