Description
Charming little Minor restored in the late 1990s; 4-speed gearbox;
alloy fuel tank; driven over 20 miles to the sale
Launched by
Morris in 1928 as a rather belated response to the Austin Seven, the diminutive
Minor started life with a Wolseley-designed overhead camshaft engine also used
by MG.
By 1931, a simpler side-valve engine had
replaced the complex and expensive ohc Minor unit, which has stood the test of
time and still stands as one of the most endearing small cars that Britain has
ever produced. Just under 40,000 of the overhead cam types and rather more than
47,000 side-valve models were built and there is a thriving owners’ club
catering for these enduring light cars.
This
charming little Morris Minor SV Tourer was first registered in Portsmouth in
August 1932 with the number RV 2430. A green continuation logbook shows that by
1946 it was with an Army officer in Pendine, Carmarthen, before moving to
Birmingham in the early 1970s.
In 1998 it was
acquired by a gentleman near Rugby, a lifelong friend of the current owner. In
the early 1950s, when they were both 17, they had driven to San Remo in Italy in
a similar Morris Minor with a group of friends also in vintage cars. A jolly
time was had by all and they had dreams of repeating the trip 50 years later,
hence the acquisition of this car (now CAS 688).
Our vendor’s friend restored the car which included fitting a
4-speed gearbox and an alloy fuel tank. Sadly the trip to Italy never
materialised and when the friend passed away in 2021 our vendor acquired the car
with the dream of completing the Italian Job with his son. This too has not yet
come to pass and so the car is for sale once more.
As you can see in the photos, CAS 688 still looks very smart,
having been only lightly used and kept garaged since it was restored. It comes
with a hood and side screens and also a spare new head gasket and a copy of an
original 105-page workshop manual.
Although the Minor has seen very little use in recent times, it was
successfully driven over 20 miles to the sale and has been starting
easily and running well as we have moved it around on site with good 60psi oil
pressure.
