1932 Riley 9 Monaco Saloon
Comprehensive
restoration in 2006; on the button; new tyres; very smart; keeps abreast of
modern traffic
The
previous owner of this splendid Monaco acquired it from Riley exponent Jim
Dunbar. Once in his workshop, he undertook a ground-up restoration which took
four years to complete. Back on the road by 2004, he greatly enjoyed the
car until parting company with it in 2009, selling it to our
vendor.
The
restoration consisted of a nut and bolt strip and rebuild, the body coming off
and being repaired with new ash as required. Living in Scotland, he decided to
make the car as water-tight as possible by ‘filling in the sunroof’ (sorry but
we are told it does rain quite a bit up there although we know the sun comes out
too), and clearly made a super job of it. All aspects of the car were carefully
rebuilt.
The
engine was fully stripped – white metalled and balanced and has proved both
reliable and sweet running ever since.
Purchased
in May 2009 by the vendor so that she could do events with her young family, it
is now only on offer because her daughter can now drive herself in her open
Austin!!
A
set of Longstone tyres was fitted in 2019 and the car has been a regular
competitor in VSCC rallies and Preston and District CC events. It has
taken part in the club championship over the last 13 years, winning the
Concours in 2019 and the driver's championship three times.
Since
lockdown, it hasn't been used so much so the vendor has decided it is a good
time to part with it and let someone else enjoy it.
It started
straight up and has run around the site very nicely for the video as you can see
and is a smart and very usable saloon.
These
Riley Nines go so well and buzz along at today's road speeds with good brakes,
and in the case of this Monaco, a cosy, draught free cabin. There is lots to
like about this one.
