Description
1934 Singer Nine Le Mans
Long term single
family ownership until approx 2013; original hood and sidescreens
included
Singer introduced the Le Mans after their unexpected and
considerable success in the 1933 Le Mans 24 hour race.
Taking a basic 9hp
four-seater and fitting different gear ratios and a huge fuel tank in
lieu of the rear seats, the result saw Singer, not only finish the race
without incident but come over the line in 13th position – no mean
feat for as sub 1,000cc car. On the back of this, Singer decided to
officially produce the two seaters in 972cc and 1,493cc format for 1934 – this
being one of the former.
Early paperwork has been lost over the years,
but according to the Singer dating certificate, this car was sold by Cheam Motor
Company to a Mr Merrix on 22nd January 1934. He is believed to have
used it up until the second world war, during which, it was put into storage.
Shortly afterwards, it was sold on and thought to have taken part in various
hill climbs. Sadly, then put away for many years before being discovered and
sympathetically restored by its third owner. It was purchased by our vendor in
2017.
Presented here with its original Surrey number, the restoration in
c.2012/3013 included a bare metal respray, a thorough re-chroming, the leather
seats re-covered and vinyl panels all round. The engine was refurbished with
pistons, timing chain etc, all new parts supplied by Singer specialists
Hardwicks. The clutch was rebuilt, the brakes, master cylinder and wheel
cylinder all attended to. As can be seen in the photos taken here, it is also
sitting smartly on recoated wheels and Longstone tyres. For chilly driving
conditions, the original hood and side screens are included, supported by a
newly fitted hood frame.
Our vendor has continued with the restoration,
making sure it does run and drive, although we are told it does still need some
minor fettling including fitting the seats correctly, connecting some
instruments and tuning the carbs.
Simply being offered for sale now due
to old age and illness, not much is needed to make this car your own and one to
enjoy for many years to come.
